Myofascial release is a hands-on strategy aimed to release and mobilise the soft tissue from the abnormal grip of tight fascia in order to restore muscle length and function.
Fascia is a thin, tough, semi-elastic type of connective tissue that wraps most structures within the body, especially the muscles. This gives rise to the term myofascial (muscle-fascia).
The role of myofascia is to support and protect the contractile components of our bodies. However, when placed under states of injury, over-load, pressure and tension, the fascia may become tight and restrictive. This may cause pain, poor neuromuscular facilitation, changed and limited movement patterns, altered postures, weakness and trigger points.
To help alleviate these issues, Physiotherapists use many techniques, including myofascial release.
